Bob and Jeff are gay and trying to maintain their relationship amidst the emotional chaos of an English working-class family. Bob's mother, Vera, believes that all would be well "if Bob could just find a nice girl and settle down" and seems to think that Bob and Jeff are just good mates who share the rent. One of Bob's sisters, Nona, obsessively cleans house to block out her distress at her husband, Arthur, leaving her for another woman. Only Lois, their other sister, and Bill, her husband, know the truth about Bob and Jeff's relationship.
