Calliope Auditions: Shrek The Musical

Shrek The Musical is a musical comedy with book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, and music by Jeanine Tesori

Synopsis: Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie; Caroline, or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears.

"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

The Rehearsals

Tentative schedule includes Sunday afternoons, plus Monday and Wednesday evenings. Rehearsals will officially begin after Labor Day weekend.

Conflicts are not permitted for tech week or performances.

 

The Location

All rehearsals and performances will be at Calliope Theatre, 150 Main Street, Boylston, MA
 

The Performances

December 10-20:

  • 7:30 pm performances on Thu., Fri., Sat. (Thursday first weekend only)
  • 2:00 pm matinee performances on Saturday, December 19, and Sundays, December 13 and 20.

The Characters

Shrek

A big, green, terrifying ogre with a heart of gold. Starts lonely and cynical but learns to love. Excellent comedic timing and powerful presence required. ● Audition Music: See "Shrek audition m169. M199.pdf" in the packet. ● Age: 25 to 45 ● Vocal Range: Baritone / Tenor (A2 – G#4)

Fiona (Adult)

A beautiful princess with a dark secret. Quirky, blunt, and highly energetic. Not a typical fairytale princess. Strong tap dancing skills are a plus. ● Audition Music: See "Adult Fiona m92-115.pdf" in the packet. ● Age: 20 to 30 ● Vocal Range: Soprano / Belter (F3 – G5)

Donkey

A fast-talking, hyperactive, and intensely loyal donkey. Excellent physical comedy skills required. Must have massive stage energy and sharp comedic timing. ● Audition Music: See "Donkey audition m 1-33.pdf" in the packet. ● Age: 20 to 45 ● Vocal Range: High Tenor / Baritenor (C3 – B4)

Lord Farquaad

The comically short, narcissistic ruler of Duloc. Arrogant, campy, and ruthlessly cruel. Played entirely on the actor's knees. Requires intense physical stamina. ● Audition Music: See "Farquaad audition m23-63.pdf" in the packet. ● Age: 30 to 50 ● Vocal Range: Baritone (B2 – D4)

Dragon

A fierce, soulful, and passionate dragon charged with guarding Fiona. A powerhouse vocalist with a commanding, diva-style presence. ● Audition Music: See "Dragon m1-30.pdf" in the packet. ● Age: 20 to 50 ● Vocal Range: Alto / Soprano Soul Belt (F3 – Eb5)

Fairytale Creatures & Ensemble Roles

Looking for a vibrant, character-driven group of actors to play Pinocchio, Gingy, Big Bad Wolf, Three Little Pigs, Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, Ugly Duckling, and more. Strong harmony skills and unique comedic personalities are highly valued. ● Audition Music: Choose any selection to your liking from the audition packet (such as the "SATB Harmonies m119-m122.pdf" cut or a character solo).
