Calliope Auditions: Man of La Mancha
Man of La Mancha is a musical by Dale Wasserman, Mitch Lee, and Joe Darlon.
Man of La Mancha is one of the world’s most popular musicals. Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th century masterwork, Don Quixote, and set during the Spanish Inquisition, the original 1965 production won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Cervantes is in prison awaiting trial during the Spanish Inquisition. He and his fellow prisoners perform a play-within-a-play, telling the story of the elderly Alonso Quijana, who renames himself “Don Quixote” and goes on a quest to right all wrongs in the world. The rousing, Spanish-influenced score includes such well-known songs as “The Impossible Dream,” “I, Don Quixote,” “Dulcinea,” “I Really Like Him,” and “Little Bird.”
Content & Intimacy Notice: This play romanticizes certain mental health conditions and uses terminology that reinforces the stigma around them. The play also contains a scene of violence of a physical and sexual nature by the muleteers (Jose, Tenorio, Paco, Juan, Anselmo, Pedro, and the Guitar Player) against Aldonza. Other intimate moments include romantic/non-violent male to female kissing, romantic/non-violent female to male physical contact, non-violent/non-romantic male to male physical contact, and violent physical male to male contact. Consent-forward intimacy agreements will be part of any staging of such scenes.
