Dancing at Lughnasa, written by the highly acclaimed Irish playwright Brian Friel, debuted in 1990 in Dublin, with subsequent productions in London and New Yorkn winning both the 1991 Olivier Award and the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play. This emotionally expressive and evocative drama, set in a village in County Donegal, Ireland, in the summer of 1936, deals with the struggles of personal and economic privation and how duty and moral responsibility often conflict with the need to escape through music, dance, and fantasy.
