Calliope Auditions: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Calliope announces auditions for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a musical by Stephen Sondheim.

The Cast

  • Males: 7 adults (ages 20's - 60+)
  • Females: 2 adult (ages 20's - 60)
  • Ensemble: 3 males or proteans, 6 females (ages 20 - 50)

    Teens (16 - 19) will be considered for the Ensemble only.

     
    CAST LIST OF PRINCIPALS

    Pseudolus (M) Age: 30s – 50s. (Baritone): A Roman slave, owned by Hero. Energetic, quick-witted, and scheming.

    Senex (M) Age: 40s – 60. (Baritone): Father of Hero, and henpecked husband to Domina. A bit doddering.

    Domina (F) Age: 40s – 60. (Alto): Senex’s shrewish wife. Controlling, demanding, and manipulative.

    Hysterium (M) Age: 40’s – 50s. (Baritone): Chief slave of Senex. High-stung and anxiety-prone, desperately wants to please his master. Is the unaware foil of Pseudolus.

    Hero (M) Age: 20s. (Tenor): Practical, romantic, somewhat naïve, impressionable. Falls in love at the first sight of Philia.

    Philia (F) Age: 20’s. (Soprano): Young, pretty, totally naïve. A virgin in house of Marcus Lycus.

    Marcus Lycus (M) Age: 40s – 60s. (Baritone): Greedy and unctuous purveyor of courtesans.

    Miles Gloriosus (M) Age: 30s – 40s. (Baritone): A captain in the Roman Army. Boastful braggart, commanding, manly, and strong (but not too bright).

    • Erronius (M) Age: 60 – 70. (Baritone – limited singing): A befuddled old man in search of his two children who were captured by pirates when they were infants.

     
    CAST LIST OF THE ENSEMBLE

    FEMALE ENSEMBLE: 6 Female Ensemble Members Age: 20s – 30s. (limited singing but must have dance experience) All are courtesans belonging to Marcus Lycus:
    Gymnasia: Tall, buxom, athletic. (the only courtesan who has speaking line)
    Tintinabula: Jingling, bell-wearing dancer
    Vibrata: Wild and vibrant
    Geminae: A pair of twins

    MALE ENSEMBLE: 3 Male Ensemble Members or Proteans Age 20s – 50s
    They play all ancillary characters (slaves, citizens, soldiers, and eunuchs).

    Sunday, Tuesday, & Thursday evenings, beginning March 7, 2022.
     

    The Performances

    May 19 - 29:

  • 7:30 pm performances on Thu., Fri., Sat. (Thursday first weekend only)
  • 2:00 pm matinee performances on Sundays and May 28
  • The Auditions

  • Friday, February 18 , 7 pm - 10 pm
  • Saturday, February 19 , noon - 3 pm
  • All auditionees will do cold readings from the script and be expected to sing "Comedy Tonight" for their vocal audition. A pdf of the song is provided. There will be no time for vocal warm-ups during the audition, so please warm-up on your own if you will need to.

    Actors auditioning for principal roles may opt to sing a solo from the score of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and should bring their own copy of the music to sing from. The pianist already has copy of the score to play from.
